Immaculate Conception Seminary, Ivhianokpodi

SCHOOL ANTHEM
Poem and Music composed by:
Rev. Fr. Stan-William O. Ede
(Vice-Rector, 2008-2011)

 Sing it standing;
sing it with glee and gusto,
 with spunk and spirit,
 with vim and vigour,
 and with zest and zeal.

1.         Arise and shine, strike the harp, sound the timbrel,
            The call comes resounding, dearest friends to thee;
To honour this hallowed abode of our nobler worth,
Planted, watered and nurtured by the Lord
At Ivhianokpodi, the land of sublime bearing,
Wherein we tread to produce thrilling fruits.

CHORUS
Hail! Hail!! We Hail!!!
O Great Immaculate Conception Seminary,
Our land of formation, our hall of fame;
Thou fount of love and home of prayer,
Thou citadel of wisdom and vineyard of knowledge,
Thou spring of virtues and seat of morals,
Primus inter pares”, we hail!
As thou radiates the golden flames of excellence
Ad Maiorem Dei Gloriam”.

2.         Dearest Lord our God, to Thee we pray,
Direct our cause and sustain our Seminary.
Guide our formators, reward our teachers, bless our parents,
And grant us the grace to soar higher;
As joyously we affirm in our accents dear,
The will to serve Thee with greater joy.

Tribute in Honour of Our Dearly Beloved Rev. Fr. Leonard Osimhekhena Ayonote (1981-2009)

WE LOVE YOU FR. LEO, REST IN PEACE

How terrifying and depressing it is for us to tread these odd and unpleasant grounds, so murky and dreary that even our enfeebled feet find it difficult to hold us up nor enclaim any progressive step for us. We have been hit by the most undesired reality of experiencing the untimely exit of our beloved, noble and cheerful brother and friend from this earthly realm.

Rev. Fr. Leonard Osimhekhena Ayonote, seven days have gone by since you closed your eyes to our world and bade a tearful goodbye to us all who love you dearly, yet it seemed like a nightmare which we have very much longed to wake up from if indeed it was. But here and now as we behold your lifeless body, we know we are not dreaming. It is true, yes, you are gone from our midst, you have answered the home-call, you have embarked so quickly on eternal flight to the great beyond, a land where joy shall never end.

So many questions have been asked regarding this unexpected journey you so courageously embraced at the young age of 28 and just only after one year in the priesthood; so much tears have been shed and still being shed as the reality continues to stare at us squarely in the face that we must now miss your amiable and blessed personality which made you a friend of all. But we are consoled by the fact that your journey, though early, is a blessed one, a divine call to the land where you will never grow old.

Fr. Leo, our dearest brother and friend, all of us your brother-priests, the Presbyterium of Auchi Diocese fondly remember you. We recall the vivacity and integrity of stature and style that graced your personality and with these you added fervor and sweetness to our fraternal bearing. Twenty-eight years ago, you sprung forth from your mother’s womb like flowers from a brook, into this world, opting to accomplish a mission which the Almighty designed for you even before he formed you in the womb (cf. Jer. 1:5). Ten years ago, you firmly answered God’s call by seeking and gaining admission to the Seminary. One year ago, you ascended God’s Altar as a priest according to the order of Melchizedek.

Leosmiles, for that is the name you were fondly called because of your ever-cheerfulness, you knew the task before you right from the moment you were ordained, and so armed with tremendous human and heaven-inspired qualities, you launched into the ministry, and accomplished in one year, great strides and enviable records that may take others five years to achieve. Spiritually, you were a giant; intellectually, you were a genius; morally, you were a leading light; pastorally, you were a caring shepherd; and generally, you were a trendsetter.

Osi-Leo, with profound admiration, we salute your heroism and courage, for when you were faced with an impossible dilemma arising from that tragic autocrash, you carried upon yourself the supposed pains of all your other companions in the vehicle so that they could stay alive and healthy. Dearest one, in life, you were a great man, in exiting this world you were a hero, and now in death, you are star, a bright and radiant light shining through eternity.

“Life is beautiful, it seems to say”; but now you are faced with the inevitable principle of life, that what is received in time must be surrendered in time; that a faithful man must heed the heavenly call while his beloved ones are left to mourn his departure. Yet still, as today, we surrender to God’s will, we find it exasperating and difficult to hold back our tears.

In our crestfallenness, we remain thrilled; thrilled by your manifold imprints on the sands of time and history by which memories of you will forever sweetly linger. You were too precious, sweet and tender, with love and understanding, indeed greatly cherished than the finest of gold. Although you were young, you acted with the wisdom of choicest sages and excelled in the council of elders and great ones. You were a rare gem, a worthy priest, a jewel of inestimable value, a cheerful giver, symbol of selfless humanity, peace-maker, confessor and counselor; you were an achiever, full of vigour, compassion, love, care and dedicated to the course of the needy.

You were a priest of unique qualities who labored tirelessly for the flourishing of the kingdom of God on earth and for the qualitative enrichment of all those you encountered. What a loving, caring, humble, inspirational, cheerful, encouraging and wonderful epitome of beauty and excellence you were. Your memory will remain evergreen.

Fr. Leo, o quam cito sit transit gloria mundi (oh how swiftly the glory of the world passes). So quickly you have fought the good fight, finished the race and kept the faith. Now there is laid for you the crown of righteousness (cf. 2 Tim 4: 7-8).

What can we say? We love you dearly, but God loves you more. We will miss you yet we are resigned to God’s holy will and bid you farewell to the land of perfect peace where we all hope to be someday. There we shall see you again, and together we shall celebrate God’s beatific presence forever.

Adieu Fr. Leo! Adieu Great and Smiling One!!
Adieu Our Dearest Brother!!!
ADIEU.

Poem: Through all of Nature in Search of Peace

PEACE IN MY HEART

I pondered upon this inestimable splendour
A pearl preciously scintillating in glamour
From the Heavens proceeds this great wonder
A boon prerequisite for harmony I amply ponder
Streaming from the highest heights in abundance
Given for humankind but neglected in ignorance.

‘Peace’, I figured unified nature in complexity
Stupefaction pervaded my being in perplexity
Decided must I encroach upon nature to extract
This pearl humanity to unite, not to distract,
Forth went I into the wider universe to loom
Really determined to bring down peace in boom.

I got to the planet Mercury and overly gaped around
Its tenuous atmosphere could not to my quest abound
Then to the extreme brightness of Venus, I proceeded
Swung with its retrogade direction, wished I succeeded
And far further into Mars’ icy structure in persistence
I searched untiringly for peace, sturdy in confidence.

With determination I got to Jupiter on procession
Glided through its internal heat surface in obsession
Further past Saturn’s brilliant rings I boldly ascended
Until Uranus’ loosed surface grisly got me suspended
Though discouraged I was, yet I drifted auspiciously
In the search for ‘Peace’ which I ventured audaciously

Darker in the solar system I advanced beyond
While accosting comets and asteroids in a bond
I reached Neptune searching on its blue steepness
And swayed through its stormier blocs of darkness
Then deeper into the dark icy heart of Pluto I went
My mission unsuccessful, I laid mute, still could vent

Pulsating in a near frustration my way I found
Back to our earth dogged to begin another round
Course committed into adventure I ably went
Searching through the globe in entirety unbent
I blasted and stormed the mountain vastness
Sliding earnestly through the valley steepness

I flew in the air like a bird and was sturdily resolute
Searched the freshness of the wind, ha! It was absolute
Like a fish I swam in the ocean’s candid munificence
Searched through its bottom and the sea’s fluorescence
As through the golden release of sunrays still I roamed
The mercurial complexion of moon-rays got me enfoamed

Fruitlessly exhausted and steeped in fatigue I halted
To worthily reappraise my mission as not to be faulted
In the stillness of my meditation came a voice so tender
“Why search for me outside, when I in your heart render?”
Lo came the realization that I went about searching in vain
For ‘PEACE’, a pearl which was already in my heart to gain

Search your hearts the floodgates of peace to open
Let peace flow out through you like a river shaken
To spread into all deserts, captives to give freedom
And unto all islands, harmony to restore minus random
Peace, the worthy key to a happy fraternity inexpressible
Expels all evil, virtues restore, human freedom responsible

Let the moon give’way its light in grave disarray
The sun its radiance may forfeit in utter dismay
Let the deep blue seas loose their brine exhaustively
The mountains their heights may shed causatively
I fear not, for peace in my heart flourishes in earnest
And must reign supreme, eternal happiness to invest.

TITLE: A PANTALEONIC EMBRACE OF BLISS

Oh, our beloved Father Pantaleon, what an experience so upsetting!
Momentous freaks of perplexity rented the air all about us,
Devastating quivers flowed down our spines uncontrollably,
And the ground beneath our feet got too enfeebled to hold us,
As the news of your most unexpected exit from the human realm
Boomeranged upon us devastatingly, creating a vacuum,
And causing the world around us to be enveloped in utter silence.

Dear Father Pantaleon, the resounding “Kpim of Excellence”,
Priest of God Most High and indefatigable Academic Professor,
Days have passed since you left but it seems like only a moment ago,
Because our hearts still struggle to grapple with the pervasive reality
That you passed away too soon, even now that we need you most,
Leaving us to roll in outbursts of streamful tears as we now miss you.

From what we knew of you, permit us to address you with a title
Which in your characteristic humility you would swiftly resent,
But which actually befits you in all glamorous strides:
“Fr. Kpim the Great”
For great was the life you lived, magnanimous the impact you made,
And so unforgettable and irreducible are the legacies you left behind.

54 years, 4 months and 9 days ago, like flowers from a brook,
You sprung forth from your mother’s womb into our open world,
You took in the first measure of atmospheric oxygen
Which you immediately turned into a meaningful string of choices:
A noble choice to live a life adequately coloured by outreaching touches,
To swim in an ocean of qualitative lifestyle and scintillating achievements,
And to be numbered among the stars that adorn the starry enfolds of humanity.
Yet within the same choice, you opted even as a star
To live simply so that others can simply live and nobly grow.

Dear Father Pantaleon, the resounding “Kpim of Excellence”,
How that choice has today become a manifest reality;
Never mind the fact that you may no longer personally show it,
The banner continuously waves itself across the sky for all to see

Six years ago, you staged a “Novel Arrival” to our Seminary,
Armed with the qualitative ideals of Spirituality and Ministry
And the vibrancy of a high-powered professor cum orator,
You lighted a new kind of light in our Seminary.
With great awe, we saw and acclaimed your worth,

Yes, a saintly scholar in a saintly community
And a scholarly saint in the land of great saints,
Even as we still do.

Amongst us, you rendered a kind of service that is stupendously unique,
Challenging us all to be armed with “La Force Spirituelle” (Spiritual Power)
And use it to prop ourselves into excellence, for we must
“Pray Aright and Publish” or “Play Away and Perish”.
You indeed covered diverse areas of academic disciplines
Offering new insights in philosophy and Theology,
And the “kpim” of it all is the dynamic Enwisdomization Theory.

Oh Father Enwisdomizer,
To your rare spiritual jingoism cum intellectual stamina
Is added humanitarian resourcefulness,
To give lasting evidence to the solidity of your theories,
To bear active witness to the balance of your personality,
As many charitable projects spell your name boldly as “FADA KPIM”
While Technical Institutions acclaim the Enwisdomizer for Founder.

“Life is beautiful, it seems to say”;
But now you are faced with the inevitable principle of life
That what is received in time must be surrendered in time;
That a faithful man must heed the heavenly call
While his beloved ones are left to mourn his departure.
Yet still, as today, we surrender to God’s will,
We find it exasperating and difficult to hold back our tears.

In our crestfallenness, we remain thrilled;
What else can be more heart-thrilling than for a man of 54 years
To dance marvelously on the stage of progress and achievements?
But for leaving the stage when the ovation was loudest,
We cannot but continue to long for more of your thrills.
What else can be more heart-rendering to have a man as you
Within a short life span of 54, live up to admirable standards
In building an enviable edifice of sanctity,
In touching the pinnacle of academic excellence,
In establishing yourself firmly as a lover of humanity,
And as an apostle of good leadership, right development and progress.
What indeed can be more glorious? We may ask again.

Indeed Father Pantaleon, you were great in life,
Now that you have taken on eternal flight to the great beyond,
You remain overwhelmingly great with your indelible imprints on the sands of history.

But Father Kpim, do you know that so many people
Are yet to find answers to the questions that they have been asking?
“Is it really true that the “propounder” of Enwisdomization has passed on?
That the originator of the Hermeholiontic Proof of God’s existence has gone from our midst?
That the indefatigable Uwaontologist and resounding moralist of the 21st Century
has closed up on the world?”
Even the handing on of the Obituary of Father Pantaleon Osondu Iroegbu
Is yet to answer convincingly, these questions which your departure elicits.

Oh Father Pantaleon
All of us gather together once again today
To pay profound respect to your “Pantaleonic” genius
Our imagination finds occupation in the times we have shared.
And as we ruminate on our nostalgic experience,
We embody an enlivened determination to follow the trail which you have blazed

In life, you were a model,
In your exit from this life, you threw us newer challenges:
That there is no excuse for those who could be scholars but are not;
That while alive, there is no limit to our potentialities;
And that time is the only deposit we have in the bank of God
yet no one knows his balance.
Your exit itself challenges us to live up to the gigantic standards
Which you so firmly impressed

Yes Father, you are gone from our midst but your works live on;
Your spiritual, academic and humanitarian legacies,
The selfless service you rendered to the training of future priests,
And to the rest of humanity, as well as lots of other achievements
Will immortalize you in the hearts of men
And continue to preach your gospel of “Help, not hinder”.

For us, this is a moment of sober reflection and potent challenge,
A cause for personal commitment and renewal,
And an occasion for thanksgiving that your life and priestly ministry
Have not been a waste nor in vain, but embodiment of resourcefulness and fulfillment.
Now Father, having fought the good fight and run a splendid course,
It has pleased the Lord to fill your lips with the NUNC DIMITTIS
Bidding goodbye to mortal existence.

Although night has fallen upon your eyes, a new day has dawned for your soul,
Yes, a new and pleasant dawn with the Heavenly hosts in Eternal Bliss
Now Father, as you say ‘good night’ to the world, and chant ‘good morning’ in heaven,
May your experience of never-ending joy in the Bosom of the Father BE –  L---O---N---G.

Adieu Father Pantaleon; Adieu, the Kpim of Excellence,
Adieu Father Kpim the Great, ADIEU.

AXIOLOGICAL CONSCIOUSNESS: FROM CONCEPTUALIZATION TO CONTEXTUALIZATION

 Stan-William Ede

Our existential reality with its corresponding human activity of inquiring into the meaning, nature and goal of human existence, finds bearing in a conclave of issues that directly impact upon such an endeavour. Amongst others is the question of value (the Right, the Good, the Beautiful, and the Approved). The inquiry into the nature, criteria, and praxis of value judgments form the core of an endeavour known as “Axiology”. Are values universal or relative? What is the ultimate value for all humanity? Seemingly simple questions but complex in themselves; they constitute the springboard for the axiological imperative.

The fundamental thrust in every axiological discourse involves the identification and appreciation of values (axiology), and more importantly, that such values may be put into practice. The particular stand a person takes on epistemological and metaphysical issues has implications for how he will think about values and moral issues. This interrelationship also holds true in the area of religious beliefs and theological endeavours. For example, a person who believes that God’s revelation is prepositional will seek a precise set of moral values to guide his value decisions; a person who believes in God’s revelation as personal rather than prepositional will look for grounds other than precise rules on which to base his value judgments.

There are three elements in the axiological equation – the subject which is the human consciousness; the object which is the thing of which value is predicated; and the value itself. Between the subject and the object, where do we find the seat of value? This question is capable of eliciting as many theories as there are thinkers. Nevertheless, there are some that ought to be considered in our search for the ideal. The first is “Axiological Subjectivism” which holds that all values are relative to the individual. Another is the “Axiological Objectivism” which ascribes value to the object independent of the human mind and judgement. There is the theory of “Cultural Relativism” which situates value judgements in the context of a particular culture. A fourth is the theory of “Absolutism” which holds that values are grounded in a reality outside humanity, i.e. the moral laws are universally binding for all and eternally true whether or not any moral law is in fact universally respected or obeyed.

Under serious and careful analysis, each of the aforementioned theories of axiology would be found to be fraught with limitations. A synopsis of all of them would help us to draw upon the advantages of each of the theses so as to arrive at a unified whole that would be to the delight of all. We shall call it the “Rational Choice Theory”. It starts with the subjectivist value position which asserts that values are relative to the individual. But as reasoning and reflective beings, those same individuals must realize that feelings are trustworthy only to the degree that they are free, impartial and informed.

By implication, we would then be opened to the reality of choices. A free choice of values is far from being determined by the unconscious mind, free from strong emotion and free from mere conditioning or indoctrination. An impartial choice of values fulfils the Golden Rule – “Do to no one what you would not want done to you” (Tob 4:15; Matt 7:12), and here also comes the Kantian principle of “Right means right for everyone”. The method of free, impartial and informed choice, it is claimed, describes the actual practice of reflective persons in different cultures and provides the most likely basis for reaching eventual agreement about values on a cross-cultural cum cross-personal level.

Far beyond the mere recognition and apprehension of value judgements, lie the more serious activities of appreciation and practice. Herein comes the fulfillment of axiology which is “praxiology”. Value is the core of being, and its practice shapes the being into a perfect model. Thus axiology plus praxiology equal to goodness and happiness.

The highest values derive from the Ultimately Ultimate Reality, God, and from Him, all other values flow and have their meaning. St. Augustine puts it this way; “Love God, and do what he wills”. Traditional beliefs about the nature of God, conformity with the supernatural will, moral laws and avenues of revealed truth, have deep roots, they remain living options for all humankind.

Let us now come home to the supernatural values as contained in Divine Revelation for our edification, practicalization, and salvation. “You must love the Lord your God with all your heart … You must love your neighbour as yourself (Matt 22:34-40; Mk 12: 29-31; Lk 10:25-28).  From love, all other virtues emanate. Be strong and be protected with the shield of faith, for with it, we are justified (Rom 3:28) in choosing and practicing the right values. Don’t end it here, pick up your Bibles, study and practice Phil 2:1-5, 14.

Let us rise up to the challenge before us by reaching out in the spirit of brotherhood and inter-personal intro-valuation. Until interest arises, the “term” remains a possibility. Interest spurs the action, and the action heralds and actuates a holistic human development.

DIVINE ENCOUNTER

Forth came the whispers of silence
Soft at first, but gradually got piercing
Like shrills from a foxhole
But out of sight to make the situation
Seem fraught with danger, I conjectured.

The sound got locked in metamorphosis
Getting thro’ series of transformation
Until the intonation begot affectivity
Pouring distinctively serene into my inn
Thro’ every facet of me into my essence

The fecundity of my experience so real
Unraveled the ineffable beauty so fine
Of a perfect illumination from on high
Revolving brilliantly all around me
Possessiveness of my faculties ensured

Just then came the splendidly serene voice
Breezing a message through my eardrums
That sparked up my entire sensory web
Just as the light powerfully lighted
And illumined my whole being aright

“Do not be afraid”, came the thrilling voice
“It is I”, followed with redemptive surety
“I love you”, he uttered with divine certainty
“Remain in my love”, he urged so really
“And you will savour a fulfilled existence!”

Cooool! Indeed I had this splendid encounter
That swept me with a much refreshing coolness
Twas an adventure rhapsodically so overwhelming
And still curling me in rapturous experiences, Oh!
Swimming in the blissful ocean of Divine Goodness.
